Made In Chelsea: Orange clearly is the new black!

It’s the guilty pleasure that makes many a Monday all the more manageable. An hours worth of gossip and trash that allows me to kick back and bicker in front of the telly with my housemates over the trials and tribulations of London’s socialites. Yup #sorrynotsorry it’s Made In Chelsea.

Ever since my admittedly religious following of this program began I’ve been very aware of the low percentage of its content being based on actual real life, with cast members regularly having to stifle smiles and giggles in the middle of supposedly emotional or heart-breaking scenes. Although it has to be said recently the cast has seriously stepped up their acting game! Despite my moans and groans, I’m there week after week tuning in to watch.

Aside from its educational and moral rating of 0, the show is unbelievably successful with its characters enjoying near-cult followings over various social media platforms. We just love to watch beautiful people in beautiful places in beautiful things that we wish we could afford!

This brings me to my main point: Made in Chelsea is without a doubt one of the best-filmed programs on television today and certainly is the best-filmed ‘reality’ TV show. The camera filters and effects they use perfectly suit the suave, sleek and expensive theme of the show and give it a polished film-like finish. This all adds to the unreachable and unattainable atmosphere surrounding the life style of the characters. I mean cast.

Now, one week I was sat with my housemates watching the latest episode when I suddenly began to notice something a bit odd. Firstly, as usual the cast were dressed in their fairly standard beige/slate wardrobes (beige in terms of actual colour and dullness). However as scene after scene went by it was unmistakable that someone or something would be orange. From flowers, to food and drink, to lipsticks and jackets, candles and coat stands, orange had clearly been selected as the accent of choice. I pointed this out to my housemates and we laughed and thought it would probably be just this episode, but no! Every week since there they are, adorning bright orange jackets and fur ruffs and drinking orange girly cocktails! It really was hilarious! I couldn’t believe the extent to which the producers were clearly willing to go to maintain continuity and ensure a ‘pretty’ image.

I mean, I like orange don’t get me wrong. It’s nice to have a pop of colour to liven up the usual cool but ultimately bland monochrome theme. It’s just that the permanently Halloweeney vibe isn’t particularly subtle, honestly, once to you see it you can’t stop. It makes for a great game to play amidst the fake crying and awkward airing of everyone dirty laundry at the most inappropriate of occasions.

I kind of feel bad for the cast though, they must be getting really, really bored of eating and drinking orange only food, which is actually a pretty narrow range! Although I suppose it’s the expensive stuff like caviar and smoked salmon. I’m sure they’ll survive.Screen Shot 2014-12-09 at 22.22.31Screen Shot 2014-12-09 at 22.38.32

All of the orange (and slate and beige) all of the time…!

Can’t wait to see what next seasons colours will be! I hope it’s rainbows. I prefer rainbows.
